Frequently asked questions:
What are the ages of the girls in Choir? Girls ages 9-18 are eligible to be members of GCW. How do you become a member? Auditions are held in the fall and the spring for new members. What is involved in the audition? Does my daughter need to prepare an audition piece? No prepared audition piece is needed. The audition is not a high-pressure audition. The girls will begin the audition in a small group, singing a familiar song. They will clap some rhythms and sing some scales to determine voice range. Girls will be selected for Choir based on their vocal abilities and maturity levels, along with the needs of the Choir. When and where are rehearsals? Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings at the First Baptist Activity Center on Independence Boulevard near the mall. The 1st soprano section rehearses from 5:15 to 6:30. The 2nd soprano and alto sections rehearse from 6:00 to 7:00. Rehearsals may be extended near the end of each season in preparation for the end of the season concert. What is the attendance policy? Each member is allowed 5 absences from rehearsals/performances each semester. If a member misses more than five rehearsals or performances she will not be allowed to perform in the semester end concert or participate in the tour. Any funds deposited towards tour will be forfeited. We will give each girl updates on absences periodically. There are no excused absences for any reason. This includes academics. In order to perform at a high level, it is very important that we have good attendance at rehearsals. It is also vital that performances are well attended so that the Choir presents itself well. How are parents involved? The Choir is operated by a volunteer board, so parent involvement is crucial. All parents are expected to take an active role in the Choir. Opportunities involve many committees. When and where do the girls perform? The Choir performs at many community events as well as many area churches throughout the year. At the end of each season, the Choir presents a concert. Does the Choir travel? The Choir has a retreat in Myrtle Beach in January of each year. In the spring, there is a Choir tour. Recently, the Choir tour has taken them to Virginia, New York City, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Orlando. What is the financial commitment? Tuition is $350 for the year (August – June). Tour typically costs $400-$500. Uniform expenses are approximately $100. Is financial assistance available? Yes, there are a limited number of tuition scholarships and tour scholarships available. These scholarships are based on financial need. More questions? Contact Choir President Jennifer Sult at jnjsult@ec.rr.com |
